Do you have sudden lower back pain? Lower back pain is unpleasant and distracting, but rarely serious. However, in some cases, like after a car accident, it can be serious.

Understanding Sudden Lower Back Pain

Lower back pain often feels a lot worse than it actually is. Most back pain issues are due to muscle strains or ligament sprains. These can be painful but get better with rest.

Poor posture, obesity, pregnancy, and some other factors can play a role in your back pain, but unless you suffer from infection or inflammation, or have recently been in an accident, you will generally be fine.

If you have undergone accident rehab but still feel lower back pain, then you might have a chronic orthopedic issue. This is not something that goes away by itself and it will require additional treatment.

To identify the issue, your doctor may ask to take an MRI or x-ray scan of your lower back. These examinations will often tell if your problem is located in your bones or in your muscles and ligaments.

Chronic Back Pain

How long have you been experiencing back pain? Chronic back pain is a real nuisance, but it is rarely dangerous. Chronic pain can lower your quality of life, so it is best to seek treatment if it is not a life-threatening condition.

When Should You Start Worrying?

On the other hand, if you experience sudden lower back pain, especially after an accident, you should look into having an MRI or x-ray scan to make sure you are ok.

Some rare diseases and conditions can also cause sudden lower back pain. These include:

  • Cancer
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Endometriosis
  • Spondylitis
  • Osteomyelitis
  • Herniated disc
  • Spinal fracture
  • Kidney stones and kidney infection
  • Pyelonephritis
  • Arthritis
  • Sacroiliitis

As well as several others. Those conditions are very rare, but some manifest often after a car accident or other physical trauma. For example, you must seek treatment for a spinal fracture as soon as possible and never wait for the pain to go away by itself.

Since the symptoms between a harmless muscle strain and a spinal fracture are often very similar, it is best to seek out medical help to be on the safe side.

If you have been in a car accident in the past and develop sudden lower back pain, then you should immediately seek medical help, even if you have had no symptoms for months.
