Perform at Your Best with Chiropractic
I constantly teach my patients about the importance of safe exercise for health benefits, both physical and mental. This is especially important as we age, when our muscle and joints suffer degeneration due to wear and tear. Benefits of regular exercise include: improved joint flexibility, greater cardio-respiratory capacity, stronger muscles and bones, increased energy, better blood flow, stress relief, regular bowel movements, enhanced brain function, sharper reflexes, heightened balance, and the list goes on.
Thanks to our wonderful Florida weather, one of the most enjoyed activities in our neck of the woods is golf. According to the National Golf Foundation’s 2013 golf participation study, there were 25.3 million golfers in the U.S. ages 6 and above in 2012. The National Golf Foundation also reports that as of January 1, 2014, there were 15,516 golf facilities in the U.S., with Florida topping the list at 1,048.
As with any physical activity, there is always the risk of injury. The most common area injured while playing golf is the lower back, possibly due to the limited range of motion of the lumbar spine during turning or rotation. Injuries of the elbow are the second most common. I’m sure you’ve heard about golfer’s elbow. Formally known as medial epicondylitis of the elbow, this condition entails inflammation of the tissues of the inner side of the elbow. Lateral epicondylitis of the elbow is also possible. It affects the outer side of the elbow, and is commonly known as tennis elbow. Rotator cuff injury at the shoulder and wrist injuries are seen in golfers as well. Injuries are not limited to the course. Improper lifting and carrying of the golf bag can cause physical stress on the back and arms.
Any professional golfer knows certain precautions should be taken to decrease the chances of injury. Incorporating stretches into the daily routine, as well as pre-round warm-ups is integral to maintaining joint flexibility. Regular cardio exercises increase endurance, and a strengthening program should target the spine and the upper extremities, with emphasis on the lower extremities as well for proper balance and support. Drinking plenty of water and clear liquids decreases the risk of dehydration.
As a musculoskeletal specialist, your chiropractor is a great asset when it comes to staying fit and ready for the game. Regular spinal and joint checkups are essential to maintain optimal joint mobility and adequate posture. We are trained to evaluate, diagnose and treat sports injuries, including golf-related conditions. In the event of muscle or joint pain or discomfort after a game, it is important to be proactive and see the chiropractor as soon as possible. Treating these conditions in a timely manner is the key to getting you safely and quickly back into the game.

Low Back Pain
Back pain is one of the most common health complaints in the world! About a quarter of US adults reported having low back pain at least one day in the prior three months and this helped make low back pain the most common cause of job-related disability and a leading contributor to missed work. Your back is your body’s main support. Along with your muscles and joints it allows you to move and carry weight. But your back is also a delicate, finely balanced structure that can easily be injured if not cared for properly.
